Kurt Jackson’s Art Donation to CCU Healing Garden and Pheonix Ward

Cornish based contemporary artist, Kurt Jackson has donated artworks to the Healing Garden and Pheonix Ward at Royal Cornwall Hospital through Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.  Kurt created an incredibly touching and emotionally moving sculpture called ‘The Nurse’s Hands’ using recycled PPE equipment to honour our staff and those we lost at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust during the COVID 19 Pandemic.

Pheonix ward has also been donated a framed limited-edition print and an archival poster to enhance the environment for patients, staff and visitors. Pheonix ward is a specialist Acute Stroke Unit, who care for patients in the days that follow a stroke.

Kurt explained why he has donated various art pieces over the years

“This hospital has meant a lot to me and my family over the years, so it means a lot to be able to give something back.” We are truly grateful to Kurt and his donations.  Access to uplifting, calming art is incredibly important for our patients, their families, and our staff. Kurt’s work brings the outside world into the hospital, surrounding people with a sense of nature, peace and place at moments when they need it most.

Donations to Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity fund the extras that the NHS budget doesn’t stretch to; the things that lift spirits, enhance care, and make a real difference to patients, families and staff.  Kurt’s artwork embodies exactly that, and we are incredibly grateful.

Journalist Lisa Young, BBC, came to talk to Kurt about his kind donations and along with Tamsyn Pattenden, Pheonix Ward and Joe Parker, Critical Care Unit.

‘The Nurses Hands’ sits amongst other pieces of sculpture created by Kurt Jackson including number of playful bronze birds in our Healing Garden, fundraised by Robin Hanbury-Tenison and supported by Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity.
