Neonatal Unit

Fund number: F2182

Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity: The Neonatal Fund logo.

Our Neonatal Unit supports some of the most vulnerable babies in Cornwall – from as early as 27 weeks’ gestation, through to full-term infants needing intensive care.

We are the only specialist neonatal service in the region, caring for families from the Isles of Scilly to the Devon border. During what is often a very difficult and emotional time, we do everything we can to ensure families feel supported, informed, and close to their baby.

Our unit has 20 cots and five family rooms, allowing parents to stay nearby and be part of their baby’s care every step of the way. Neonatal care depends on highly specialised equipment. Incubators, for example, create a warm, humid environment that mimics the womb-giving tiny babies the best possible start in life. This equipment is essential, but it is also expensive.

We are now fundraising to do two important things:

  • Improve and expand our specialist equipment
  • Create a calm, multi-purpose family space within our unit

This new space will give parents somewhere to breathe, talk, and find support-without being away from their baby. It will also be used for emotional support, developmental care, and family bonding. We are hoping to raise £20,000 to make this vision a reality. Every donation, no matter how small, will help us provide better care, comfort, and support for babies and their families at one of the most challenging times in their lives.

Other ways your support can help

Donations to the Neonatal Unit Fund are used for the benefit of babies, their families, and the staff working in the Neonatal Unit. With your help, we can fund additional equipment, comforts and services that improve everyday experiences and outcomes.

Examples of what your generosity can support include:

  • Specialist equipment and resources that contribute to developmental care and infant comfort.
  • Enhanced family facilities, supporting bonding, feeding and rest during extended hospital stays.
  • Items that support staff wellbeing, helping teams continue to deliver the highest standard of compassionate care.
  • The fund can also support additional services and training, enabling staff to attend specialist courses, keep up to date with best practice, and develop new skills that directly benefit our babies and families.
